In a data warehouse, printing requirements will need to be clearly established. From my experience, printing is not a common data warehouse requirement. The result sets of most queries are too large to print meaningfully. It is most likely that the facility to print from the server wi1l be required only by administration and operations staff. Large result sets are generally used as the base data sets for further analysis. Often these will be extracted from the server onto the user’s PC for further analysis in local tools. The printing of final results from these extracts will again be done locally or on network printers. The one requirement that does occasionally arise for printing from the server is for standard and regular reports. Even these will generally be printed on netvvork printers closer to the user’s location, or often they are mailed or copied to another machine.
